I'm reading The Road to Character because I think we often get hung up on perfecting our personalities but that's only the tip of the iceberg...
I never plotted a career path for myself. I saw problems that I could fix, and I worked on them. In order to be of more use I had to not only employ my strengths but work out the kinks. I think that's what David Brooks means when he says we are summoned by life. A career is all about you. A vocation requires humility, because it will change you to meet its demands.
The secret is here in the present. If you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it. And, if you improve upon the present, what comes later will also be better. Forget about the future, and live each day...Each day, in itself, brings with it an eternity.
