I never plotted a career path for myself. I saw problems that I could fix, and I worked on them. In order to be of more use I had to not only employ my strengths but work out the kinks. I think that's what David Brooks means when he says we are summoned by life. A career is all about you. A vocation requires humility, because it will change you to meet its demands.
